Internet, WWW, intranet

What is the Internet?

The term 'internet' can best be understood by breaking it up into 'inter' and 'net'. Then 'net' refers to a computer network and 'inter' refers to interconnections between two or more computer networks and computers on these networks. This is how the Internet began back in the 1970s. The problem was how to connect packet-switched networks in North America and Europe. It was solved by Robert Kahn, Vint Cerf, and others, and the Internet was born.

Internet - a network of computer networks and computers using unique IP addresses and TCP/IP.

The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web (WWW), commonly known as the Web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. Using a web browser, users view web pages that may contain text, images, and other multimedia and navigate between them using hyperlinks.

WWW (World Wide Web) - a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet; also called the Web.

What is an intranet?

An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes intranet refers to an internal website.

Intranet - a private network within an organisation which may offer printer sharing, file sharing, communication, private websites etc...which uses internet technologies such as TCP/IP and web browsers.
