A table of contents is a list of sections, chapters, or topics with their corresponding page numbers, found at the beginning of a document to help readers navigate it.

It serves as a roadmap for understanding the structure and finding specific information quickly. These lists can be automatically generated in many word processors and are essential for long documents, books, and reports.

It usually appears at the beginning and shows:

  • Section titles
  • Page numbers
  • A clickable link to each section (in digital documents)

Example:

1. Introduction..........3
2. Main Part.............5
3. Conclusion...........10

  • Navigation: Allows readers to jump to a specific section or chapter.
  • Structure: Provides an overview of the document's organization.
  • Page numbers: Indicates the starting page for each section.
  • Automatic generation: Most modern word processors can create a ToC automatically based on heading styles in the document, making it easy to update.
  • Placement: Typically appears at the front of a document, after the title or cover page.
